Watford Almshouses Celebrate Legacy with Blue Plaque Unveiling
Added on 23/06/25

A significant piece of Watford's rich history, often overlooked by passersby, took centre stage on Saturday 21st June 2025. The Bedford, Morison and Cordery Almshouses Charity, established in a remarkable 1580, held a special Garden Party to celebrate its enduring legacy and the unveiling of a prestigious Blue Plaque.

Nestled discreetly off the bustling High Street, the Grade II listed Almshouses in St Mary's Close (opposite St Mary's Church) have provided vital accommodation for single men and women over 60 years of age, with reduced income, and strong local ties for over four centuries. Despite its historical significance and ongoing community role, many local residents, including Watford FC fans and High Street shoppers, remain unaware of its presence and importance.

The Blue Plaque serves as a testament to the Almshouses' incredible record of continuous occupation and service to the community of Watford and its surrounding ancient parishes since its establishment in 1580. This makes it a truly unique and cherished part of the town's heritage.

"We are incredibly proud of the Bedford, Morison and Cordery Almshouses Charity and its long and impactful history. This Garden Party is an opportunity to not only celebrate this remarkable milestone and the Blue Plaque but also to raise awareness about the vital work we do in providing safe and comfortable homes for our residents."

The Garden Party held in the newly refurbished gardens at 18, St Mary’s Close, Watford brought together prominent local figures and residents, including the oldest resident, who celebrated her 102nd birthday this year!

Among the distinguished guests attended was Mayor Peter Taylor, Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Luther Blissitt, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Nicholas Buxton, CEO from Watford Palace Theatre, Steve Marmion and Hertfordshire County Councillor Richard Roberts, alongside many other valued guests and residents.

Adding to the festivities, an original sculpted bird bath, created by a local sculpture group and inspired by the Almshouses' rich history, was also unveiled during the party by Bedford, Morison and Cordery Almshouses Charity Chair Felicity Evans and High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Nicholas Buxton.
