Introducing the Tyrwhitt Suite: Welcome to Our New Tumble Dryers!
Added on 29/09/25
Two new heat pump tumble dryers have been installed in our beautifully renovated garden hut (which has been named the “Tyrwhitt Suite” in memory of the late Norman Tyrwhitt who served as a Trustee for over 20 years before his passing in March 2025 this year)

We’re delighted to announce the installation of two state-of-the-art heat pump tumble dryers in the newly refurbished garden hut, in honour of Norman Tyrwhitt’s remarkable service and dedication to the Almshouse community.

Mavis Tyrwhitt is pictured at the Tyrwhitte Suite with Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Luther Blissitt and High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Nicholas Buxton at this years Summer Garden Party, 2025.

This serene and thoughtfully upgraded space offers residents a more energy-efficient and user-friendly laundry experience. Heat pump technology is not only kinder to the environment but also gentler on fabrics, making it a welcome addition to our facilities.

To help everyone get started, a clear step-by-step user guide has been produced. If you’re unsure how to operate the dryers or would simply like a demonstration, Wardens Adeline and Michael are happy to assist. Whether it’s your first time using a heat pump dryer or you’d like a refresher, they’ll walk you through the basic functions with care and clarity.

We hope the Tyrwhitt Suite becomes a practical and peaceful part of your weekly routine and a lasting tribute to a man whose kindness and commitment helped shape our community.

Memorial Rose Planting Ceremony

In a touching tribute to Norman, a memorial rose planting ceremony was held on a sunny autumn afternoon in late September. His wife, Mavis Tyrwhitt, was Guest of Honour, joined by Trustees and residents for the occasion. The ceremony was followed by tea and cakes in number 19.

Norman, who devoted his life to public service including two tenures as the town’s Mayorwas especially fond of roses. The newly planted climbing rose, complete with its own trellis linking to the pergola, now blooms as a lasting reminder of an exceptional person who is deeply missed.
